Credentials and fees matter, but so does how working with someone feels. These are the signs clients most often mention when a relationship works well.
- They ask about your goals before talking about products
- They explain costs in dollars, clearly, without being asked twice
- They’re patient with questions and encourage you to compare
- Your money is held at an independent custodian, with statements sent to you
- They’re clear about whether they act as a fiduciary
- You leave meetings understanding more than when you arrived
And some reasons to slow down
- Pressure to decide or move money quickly
- Vague answers about what you’ll pay
- Promises of high returns with little risk
- Reluctance to put things in writing
Trust your instincts. If something feels rushed or unclear, it’s perfectly fine to keep looking.
Tip. Use the scorecard on each advisor’s profile to rate your conversations on the same five criteria.
